Professor David Samols is a leading researcher in the Department of Biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. With a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of Chicago and postdoctoral training at Roche Institute of Molecular Biology and University of Oregon's Institute of Molecular Biology, his work focuses on the acute phase response and C-reactive protein (CRP) biology.
- Key research areas: CRP transcriptional regulation, cytokine signaling pathways, transcription factor interactions, inflammatory disease models
- Methodologies: Transgenic mouse models, Hep3B cell studies, molecular cloning, protein biochemistry
Publications demonstrate expertise in CRP's anti-inflammatory properties across septic shock, pulmonary inflammation, and antigen-induced arthritis models. Collaborations with Dr. Irwin Kushner have produced seminal works on CRP's clinical significance and transcriptional mechanisms.
Scientific contributions include:
- Elucidating C/EBPβ's critical role in cytokine responsiveness
- Discovering indirect NFκB (rel proteins) activation pathways
- Establishing CRP's in vivo anti-inflammatory effects
- Advancing understanding of evolutionary conserved biotin enzymes
