David Roxburgh is the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Professor of Islamic Art History and Acting Director of the Alwaleed Islamic Studies Program at Harvard University, affiliated with the Department of History of Art and Architecture in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Education:

His research centers on Islamic visual culture with emphasis on manuscript painting, art of the book, and calligraphic traditions. Roxburgh explores Timurid architectural heritage, Sino-Islamic artistic exchanges, aesthetic theory, and the historiography of collecting practices. His methodological approach prioritizes primary textual sources and material analysis of artifacts.

Roxburgh has mentored graduate students through specialized seminars, notably producing the edited volume An Album of Artists’ Drawings from Qajar Iran (2017). He co-curated major international exhibitions including Turks: A Journey of a Thousand Years (2005), Traces of the Calligrapher (2007), and Technologies of the Image (2018), contributing scholarly catalogues that bridge academic research and public engagement.
He leads the Alwaleed Islamic Studies Program while maintaining strong ties to the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture, a Harvard-MIT initiative examining built environments across Muslim societies.
