Teren Sevea is the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at Harvard Divinity School (HDS). He holds appointments in the Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations department and collaborates with the Committee on the Study of Religion. His work bridges history, anthropology, and religious studies with a focus on South/Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean world.
Education: AB (National University of Singapore), MSc (London School of Economics), PhD (University of California, Los Angeles). Prior to Harvard, he was Assistant Professor of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Research focuses on Islamic networks, Sufi textual traditions, and material culture. Current projects include Singapore Islam: The Prophet's Port and Sufism across the Oceans and Animal Saints and Sinners. Leads the multimedia Lighthouses of God project mapping Indian Ocean sanctity through GIS and visual media.
Awards include the 2022 Harry J. Benda Prize for Miracles and Material Life: Rice, Ore, Traps and Guns in Islamic Malaya (Cambridge UP 2020). Teaching spans graduate (HDS/GSAS) and undergraduate courses on Islamic history, South/Southeast Asia, and Indian Ocean studies.
