David Roper is a Professor of Biochemistry at the School of Life Sciences, University of Warwick, specializing in microbial biochemistry and antibiotic resistance. His research bridges structural biology, microbiology, and drug discovery to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Education:

Research Interests: The Roper group investigates bacterial cell wall biosynthesis (particularly peptidoglycan pathways), the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance (e.g., Serine Threonine Kinases), and bacterial cell division (e.g., FtsZ protein complexes). They employ interdisciplinary methods such as X-ray crystallography, microbiology, and synthetic biology to study these processes and develop novel antimicrobial drugs.
Grants & Collaborations: Current funding includes grants from the MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, EPSRC, and UNESCO L'Oreal. His work collaborates nationally and internationally, with affiliations to the Howard Dalton Centre, Warwick Antimicrobial Interdisciplinary Centre, and Warwick Integrated Structural Biology Centre.

Teaching & Outreach: He teaches Biochemistry to 2nd and 3rd-year students and supervises Mbio/PhD students. He co-organizes the biannual Great Wall Symposium on bacterial cell walls and participated in the MRC Centenary webinar on penicillin and AMR. The lab relocated to the £54M Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB) in April 2021.
