David Relman is a Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) and the Thomas C. and Joan M. Merigan Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology. He is Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System and directs FSI’s Biosecurity Initiative. Relman pioneered studies of the human microbiota, focusing on microbial community assembly and resilience, particularly in clinical settings. His work integrates ecological theory with clinical studies, advancing understanding of antibiotic resistance and microbiome dynamics.
Relman holds advanced degrees from MIT (S.B., Biology) and Harvard Medical School (M.D.). He has served on key national committees, including the NAS review of the 2001 Anthrax Letters investigation and the National Science Advisory Board on Biosecurity. Awards include NIH Pioneer and Transformative Research Awards, and election to the National Academy of Medicine (2011).
His research spans biosecurity, microbial ecology, and global health. Recent publications emphasize governance of risky research, AI in biomedicine, and microbiome influences on health. He advocates for stronger oversight of pathogen research and genomic technologies, contributing to policies on pandemic preparedness and dual-use research.
