David R. Williams is a Distinguished Professor and Harry G. Day Chair in the Department of Chemistry at Indiana University Bloomington. His career spans over four decades, beginning in 1980, with expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and natural products synthesis.
Education:
- B.S. (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from St. Lawrence University (1970s)
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from MIT (1976, under Prof. George Büchi)
- National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowships at Harvard University with Professors E.J. Corey and R.B. Woodward (Nobel laureates)
Research Focus: Development of total synthesis methodologies for biologically active natural products, including marine natural products, macrocycles, antibiotics, and alkaloids. His work has yielded over 50 synthetic natural products with potential therapeutic applications in cancer and disease treatment.
