David R. M. Beck is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the Program in American Indian Studies. He is also Professor Emeritus of Native American Studies at the University of Montana, where he served as department chair (2010-2014). Previously, he held roles at NAES College and the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research focuses on federal American Indian policy, urban Indigenous history, labor history, and Cold War-era Indigenous experiences.
Beck holds a B.A. in American Culture from Northwestern University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His work has earned prestigious awards, including the Robert G. Athearn Award for City Indian (2016) and the Wisconsin Historical Society Book Awards for Siege and Survival (2003) and The Struggle for Self-Determination (2006).
His publications include Bribed with Our Own Money (2024), analyzing federal coercion in the 1950s-60s, and Unfair Labor? (2019), examining Indigenous labor at the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. Current research explores U.S. treatment of Indigenous peoples in the Pacific and continental U.S. during the Cold War.
