David Pulford

Dr David Pulford is a Researcher in the Department of Quantum Science & Technology at the Australian National University, maintaining a dual affiliation with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) where he has worked continuously since 1994. His career spans quantum technologies, optical sciences, and defense-related research initiatives.

His educational background includes:

Dr Pulford's research encompasses quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum networks, quantum key distribution, optical sensing, optical communications, atomic/molecular spectroscopy, and acoustics. Current work focuses on quantum memories and network applications for secure communications and sensing systems, building on decades of cross-disciplinary defense research.

His scientific recognition includes:

• Chief Defence Scientist Fellowship (2016) for compact atomic clock development and entanglement-based synchronization

Dr Pulford actively mentors high school students (years 9-12) through the Science Mentors ACT program on quantum technology and radio astronomy projects. He previously held a long-term research attachment at the University of Maryland's Laboratory for Physical Sciences in the late 1990s.

He serves as deputy leader for the Quantum Assured PNT Science, Technology and Research Shot (since 2020) and leads quantum memory development within the Solid state spectroscopy group, driving DSTG-ANU collaborative research in quantum assurance systems.
