David Priestland is Professor of Modern History and Tutor in Modern History at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, and has served as Vice-Principal since April 2023. His work spans the comparative history of communism and neoliberalism, with a focus on their ideological and political impacts in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Research interests include Soviet political culture (1920s-1930s), global communism, and the evolution of market liberalism since the 1970s. Recent projects analyze neoliberalism's interaction with former communist systems through cultural and historical sociological frameworks.
Publications reveal trends in ideological history, comparative authoritarianism, and economic thought. His work bridges narrative history with structural analysis, emphasizing power dynamics and cultural mobilization.

Priestland supervises DPhil students, including Josef Havránek (University College) and Daniel McAteer (Wadham College). He is resident fellow at Nuffield St Edmund (NSE) and Governing Body Fellow.
