David Pietz is a Professor of Chinese History in the Department of History at the University of Arizona and holds the UNESCO Chair in Environmental History. His research focuses on environmental history of modern China, supported by grants from leading institutions like the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, Mellon Foundation, and Guggenheim Foundation. He teaches courses including Modern East Asia, East Asian Environmental History, and Dimensions of Globalization.
His research interests emphasize the intersection of environmental policy, water management, and socio-political development in China. Recent publications explore themes such as water resource governance, river engineering projects, and landscape transformations in East Asia.
