David Petersen is a Professor of Bassoon at the University of Music and Theatre Rostock since 2021. He also teaches at the universities of Frankfurt and Mainz (since 2002), where he heads the woodwind department, and at the Latina Music High School in Halle (Saale). As a performer, he has been principal bassoonist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra since 1992 and a member of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra since 2009. Petersen is a founding member of the Gewandhaus Octet and an active soloist and chamber musician.

Research and Performance Interests: Petersen's artistic work centers on Bassoon Performance, Chamber Music, and Orchestral Studies. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician at festivals worldwide, collaborating with ensembles such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, and the Deutsches Sinfonieorchester under conductors including Herbert Blomstedt and Roger Norrington. His recordings include a solo CD of bassoon concertos by André Jolivet and W.A. Mozart and a chamber music album with the Leitzinger Bassoon Quartet.
Teaching and Mentoring: Petersen has been teaching bassoon since 2002, mentoring students at the university level and in high school. He regularly conducts masterclasses in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, the USA, and Finland, fostering the next generation of wind musicians. His leadership as head of the woodwind department at Frankfurt and Mainz underscores his commitment to music education.
Ensembles: A founding member of the Gewandhaus Octet, Petersen has toured internationally with the ensemble. His orchestral career includes long-standing positions with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, contributing to a rich legacy of musical performance.
