David Perkins Billington is the Gordon Y. S. Wu Professor of Engineering at Princeton University's School of Engineering and Applied Science, where he joined the faculty in 1960 after initial roles as a structural engineer and visiting lecturer. He holds a B.S. in Engineering from Princeton (1950) and was a Fulbright Fellow in Belgium.
His research redefined structural engineering as an art form, focusing on:
- Concrete thin-shell design and large-scale structures
- Historical analysis of engineering pioneers
- Interdisciplinary studies connecting engineering with politics, art, and society
Major awards include:
- Election to National Academy of Engineering (1986)
- Director’s Award for Distinguished Teaching Scholars (2003)
