Dr. David Peate is a Professor of Geochemistry and Department Chair at the University of Iowa, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on using elemental and isotopic data from volcanic rocks and minerals to investigate magma generation in diverse tectonic settings, including continental flood basalts, subduction zones, and ocean islands. He also applies geochemical techniques to interdisciplinary problems such as impact cratering, sedimentary geochemistry, geoarchaeology, and environmental lead pollution.

His lab trains graduate and undergraduate researchers in advanced analytical methods like LA-ICP-MS, electron microprobe, and petrographic microscopy.
