David Parsons MA, PhD is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) at the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS), part of the University of Wales. His academic career has focused on the vernacular languages of medieval Britain, particularly as revealed through place-names. Prior to joining CAWCS in February 2009, he served as Director of the Institute for Name-Studies at the University of Nottingham, establishing his reputation as a leading scholar in place-name studies.
Dr. Parsons' research centers on medieval linguistics with special emphasis on the complex interactions between Welsh, English, Norse, Gaelic, and Cumbric languages in early Britain. His work examines how place-names serve as linguistic fossils that reveal historical patterns of language contact, cultural boundaries, and religious practices. He has made significant contributions to understanding the survival of Latin in post-Roman Britain, the evidence of place-names for medieval church structures, and the linguistic landscape of border regions like Oswestry in Shropshire.
His scholarly output demonstrates remarkable consistency and depth, with publications spanning from the 1990s to the present day. Recent works continue his exploration of linguistic border zones while incorporating interdisciplinary approaches that bridge historical linguistics, archaeology, and religious studies. His articles reveal a methodological sophistication in using place-names as primary evidence for reconstructing medieval linguistic landscapes.
Dr. Parsons serves as Director of the 'Survey of English Place-Names' - the longest-established research project supported by the British Academy - and sits on committees for the 'Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture' and the Welsh Place-Name Society. He is editor of the name-studies journal Nomina, shaping scholarly discourse in his field through this important publication.
His leadership extends to the 'Cult of Saints in Wales' project, which publishes critical editions of medieval Welsh prose and poetry alongside extensive commentary on saints and their veneration. This work has created valuable resources for scholars across multiple disciplines including Celtic studies, religious history, and medieval literature.
