David Nygren is a Researcher at the Department of Infection Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Lund University, Sweden. He serves as teaching staff for the Medical Programme and is affiliated with the Infect@LU network. His work focuses on bacterial and viral pathogenesis, clinical diagnostics, and global health applications in infectious diseases.
Nygren's research spans bacteriology (particularly Fusobacterium necrophorum infections and Lemierre's syndrome) and virology (SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics). He employs observational studies, molecular diagnostics, and proteomic analyses to investigate complications in pharyngotonsillitis, bloodstream infections, and aerosol transmission. His work bridges laboratory research with clinical applications in Swedish and Gambian healthcare settings.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a dual focus: bacterial pathogenesis studies examining F. necrophorum carriage-to-infection progression and viral transmission research quantifying SARS-CoV-2 aerosol infectivity. This work demonstrates consistent methodological rigor through cross-sectional analyses, retrospective studies, and molecular characterization across diverse clinical contexts.
Nygren completed his doctoral dissertation on "Local and invasive infections with Fusobacterium necrophorum" (2017-2023) under Prof. Magnus Rasmussen's supervision. His research has been featured in international journals and garnered media attention for its public health implications.
As part of Lund University's Translational Infection Medicine group, Nygren collaborates with clinicians at Skåne University Hospital and participates in the Infect@LU network, contributing to interdisciplinary research on infection diagnostics and treatment protocols.
