David Nolan is an Associate Professor in the School of Arts and Communication at the University of Canberra, and a member of the News & Media Research Centre. His research focuses on journalism’s role in contemporary political and social relations, particularly regarding race, citizenship, and humanitarian communication. He leads the ARC-funded project Amplifying Indigenous News: A Digital Intervention and has managed grants totaling over AUD 2.5 million. Nolan has held significant roles, including President of the Australian and New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA, 2021–2022). His work bridges academia and practice, emphasizing socially progressive outcomes through media interventions.
Research Interests: Nolan’s expertise spans theoretical and empirical studies of journalism, with emphasis on Indigenous media, race relations, and pandemic reporting. He has conducted extensive research on Sudanese Australians’ media representation and pioneered frameworks for best practices in reporting on marginalized communities. His recent projects include developing digital tools like Wakul to amplify Indigenous voices.
