David Nicholas is currently serving as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary, where he also holds the position of Professor. He is a Full Member of both the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education. Additionally, he serves as a Child Health & Wellness Researcher at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute, Owerko Centre.
His educational background includes:
- B.S.W. in Social Work, The University of Calgary (1985)
- M.S.W. in Social Work, University of Calgary (1988)
- Ph.D. in Social Work, University of Toronto (1998)
Professor Nicholas's research program focuses on neurodevelopmental disabilities and chronic health issues in childhood and adolescence. His work examines quality of life of children and family members, incorporates the social determinants of health, and investigates transition and access to services. He actively participates in the University of Calgary's Child Health and Wellness strategic initiative (2020-2025).
His methodological approach is diverse, utilizing qualitative, mixed-methods, and synthesis/systematic review approaches. His research incorporates multiple partnerships at community, provincial, and international levels, reflecting his commitment to collaborative and impactful scholarship.
His scholarly contributions span autism spectrum disorder, neurodevelopmental disorders, health services research, and patient and family-centered care. Recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on participatory research methods, online support systems, and the transition experiences of individuals with chronic conditions from childhood to adulthood.
Professor Nicholas has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work:

As Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Work, Professor Nicholas oversees academic programs, faculty development, and strategic initiatives. His leadership extends to committee work, including his previous role as Chair of the Allied Health Research Committee for The Kidney Foundation of Canada (2011). His research program has secured funding for multiple projects focused on improving healthcare experiences and outcomes for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families.
Through his affiliations with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education, Professor Nicholas contributes to interdisciplinary teams focused on understanding and improving mental health and neurological conditions. His work with the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute underscores his commitment to translating research into practical applications that benefit children and families in clinical settings.
