David Newsam is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, where he has taught since 1989 in the Guitar and Professional Music departments. He serves as director of the Classical Guitar Chamber program and specializes in private instruction for classical and jazz guitar. His career includes performances and clinics with jazz luminaries like Clark Terry, Milt Jackson, and guitarists such as Jim Hall and Gene Bertoncini.
Newsam was previously the Artistic Director of the Boston Classical Guitar Society and is a member of the Back Bay Guitar Trio. He studied under Robert Shaw in Connecticut and later at Berklee with mentors including Jim Kelly, Larry Baione, and William Leavitt. His teaching philosophy emphasizes balancing musical passion with career sustainability, coauthoring Making Money Teaching Music to address this.
He offers online courses through Berklee Online, including Acoustic Blues Guitar and Classical Guitar 101, alongside private guitar lessons at multiple proficiency levels.
