Dr. David Nettleingham is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Kent's School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research. He also serves as Admissions and Recruitment Officer. Previously, he held roles including Sociologist-in-Residence at The Margate School (2022–24) and has exhibited as an artist. His academic journey includes a BA (2006), MA (2007), and PhD (2013) in Sociology from the University of Kent.
Research interests span cultural memory, heritage practices, deindustrialization, and the intersection of sociology with art. He employs oral history, archival methods, and creative approaches to explore topics like radical cultural movements and community engagement. Recent work examines narratives of industrial decline and socialist transformation.
Teaching focuses on modules such as Narrative & Cultural Memory, Modern Culture, and Creative Project Development. He actively supervises students in cultural memory, oral history, and deindustrialization.
Publications include studies on Thames sailing barge heritage, miners’ strike narratives, and deindustrialization’s sociocultural impacts. His work bridges academia and public engagement through workshops, installations, and community projects.
