David N. Myers

David N. Myers is a Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he holds the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History. He serves as director of the Luskin Center for History and Policy and the UCLA Initiative to Study Hate, with leadership roles in the History Department (1996-2000, 2004-2010, 2010-2015) and Jewish Studies. After earning his A.B. at Yale (1982), he completed his Ph.D. at Columbia (1991) following studies at Tel-Aviv and Harvard Universities.
Myers' research focuses on modern Jewish intellectual and cultural history, with expertise in
- German-Jewish thought
- Zionist historiography
- Diaspora studies
- Hasidic communities
- Jewish cultural memory
- Comparative secularization
Myers' publications span six authored books and twelve edited volumes, with recent articles analyzing minority-majority cultural dynamics, religious authority in Jewish communities, and redefinitions of Jewish nationhood. His 2022 National Jewish Book Award-winning American Shtetl examines Kiryas Joel's unique socio-political structure.
