David Musgrave is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts London (UAL). He has held this position since October 2005. His educational background includes a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design (1994–1997) and a PGCert from UAL (2006–present).
His research interests focus on the practice and theory of image making, narrative fiction, and the entanglement of art, technology, and science, particularly exploring the social and artistic implications of artificial intelligence. His creative work spans drawing, AI-assisted photography, moving image, and novel writing, consistently interrogating the boundaries between human and digital creativity.
Notable works include his 2022 novel Lambda (Europa Editions), described as 'literary SF at its best' by The Guardian, and the 2024 animated short The Sad Life and Happy Death of Paper Napkin Holder Bear. He has exhibited globally, including solo shows at greengrassi (London, 2024/2018), Luhring Augustine (NY, 2014/2008), and Marc Foxx (LA, 2011), with works in collections like MoMA and Tate.
Musgrave co-organized The Exploded Map (2023), a celebration of Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow, featuring contributions from scholars and artists like Tom McCarthy. His practice critically engages with technological evolution while maintaining a humanistic perspective.
