Dr David Mulryne is a Royal Society University Research Fellow and Proleptic Reader in Theoretical Cosmology at Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences and the Centre for Fundamental Physics. He is the Director of Teaching and Learning for the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Deputy Director of Education for the School. His research focuses on theoretical cosmology and gravity, particularly inflation, primordial black holes, and modified gravity theories. He has supervised multiple PhD students and holds grants from the Royal Society and STFC.
Education: MSci from the University of Cambridge (2003), PhD from Queen Mary University of London (2006). Postdoctoral positions at DAMTP Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Queen Mary before securing his current fellowship in 2014.
Research Interests: Study of the early universe’s structure and evolution, including inflation’s role in cosmic structure formation, gravitational waves, and primordial black holes. Recently expanded into modified gravity and its implications for black hole physics. His work bridges theory and observation, leveraging numerical methods and analytical techniques.
Grants & Awards: Royal Society University Research Fellowship (2014–2026), multiple grants from STFC and Royal Society for research on inflationary physics and numerical simulations. Total grant funding exceeds £2.5 million.
Outreach: Coordinates astronomy unit outreach, delivers cosmology lectures, and manages a 5-meter planetarium. Popular talks include “How Big is the Universe?” and “Ping Ping Particle Physics,” using engaging demonstrations like particle accelerators. Active in public engagement, including Royal Institution lectures.
Labs & Teams: Leads a research team with postdoctoral researchers Dr Laura Iacconi and Dr Luis Padilla. Supervises PhD students Ethan Milligan and Andrea Costantini. Former students include Matthew Davies, Pedro Fernandes, and Zac Kenton.
