Dr. David Merwine serves as Associate Professor of Biology, Division Chair of Biological and Health Sciences, and Director of the Biology Program at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. He joined the institution in 2007 after research positions at the University of Southern California and Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, teaching courses including Human Anatomy & Physiology, Neurobiology, and Biomedical Engineering.
His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Physiological Optics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (1997) and a B.S. in Pre-Medicine from Juniata College (1985). University service roles encompass Faculty Senate Council, Educational Policies Committee, and Tenure and Promotion Committee membership.
Research centers on visual motion/contrast computation, retinal neuropharmacology, sensory-dependent neural development, and neuroengineering, with publications in vision/neuroscience journals plus the Handbook of Brain Theory and Neural Networks and Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science. Interdisciplinary work bridges experimental and computational approaches to neural mechanisms.
Community engagement features annual K-12 STEM outreach at GGB Elementary for first graders and active participation in Bradford Little Theater as both board member and performer.
