David McCalley

Professor David McCalley is a Professor in Bioanalytical Science at the University of the West of England, working within the Health and Applied Sciences (HAS) department under the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. With an h-index of 45, he has established himself as a leading authority in chromatographic science, evidenced by being named one of the world's 100 most influential analytical scientists by Analytical Science magazine in 2013, 2015, 2019, and 2021.

Professor McCalley holds BSc, MSc, PhD, and FHEA qualifications. His research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms and applications of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC) to solve problems in biomedical, pharmaceutical and forensic science. He has investigated causes of overloading and peak tailing in reversed phase HPLC, particularly with pharmaceutical applications, and studied elevated temperature effects in HPLC to improve analysis speed. His work on column classification for pharmaceutical analysis has been adopted by regulatory authorities in the USA.

Professor McCalley's recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC), with numerous articles examining column equilibration, peak shape optimization, and mobile phase effects. His research shows a progression from fundamental chromatographic mechanisms to practical applications in pharmaceutical analysis, environmental monitoring, and biopharmaceutical characterization.

He has delivered over 30 invited lectures at major international conferences since 2013, including multiple HPLC symposia, Chromatography Society events, and presentations at Harvard University, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the British Mass Spectrometry Society.

His research group focuses on GC, GC/MS, HPLC, Mass Spectrometry, and Separation Science, with particular expertise in hydrophilic interaction chromatography and reversed-phase chromatography applications for pharmaceutical analysis.
