معرفی
David Luther is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at George Mason University, where he leads the Luther Lab focused on behavioral ecology, tropical ecology, and conservation biology. He earned his PhD in Ecology from UNC Chapel Hill in 2008 and specializes in avian responses to environmental changes, including urbanization, fragmentation, and climate shifts.
Luther's research examines tropical avian communities, thermoregulatory evolution in birds, and efficacy of conservation actions. His work spans Amazonian rainforests (e.g., rainfall manipulation experiments) and Virginia grasslands, integrating field studies with remote sensing and biodiversity modeling.
His publications emphasize conservation biology, urban adaptation, and tropical ecosystems, with recent trends exploring climate impacts on Neotropical birds, lidar-based biodiversity mapping, and behavioral management for species translocations.
Awards:
- Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award (2023)
- Chairs Award of Excellence (2018)
- Mentoring Excellence Award (2015)
- Stearn Center Teaching Excellence Award
- OSCAR Sustained Mentoring Excellence Award
Luther actively mentors graduate students (e.g., 18+ PhD/MS advisees) and secured grants from NSF, 4-VA, and GMU for projects like Amazon biodiversity monitoring and grassland bird conservation. He co-leads a continental-scale NSF initiative analyzing forest biodiversity responses to climate change.
The Luther Lab collaborates with institutions including the Smithsonian, Virginia Working Landscapes, and Brazilian research centers (e.g., BDFFP, UFAM). Current projects include Amazon microclimate refugia studies and Virginia grassland bird ecology.
