Dr. David Lumley is a Professor and Department Head of Sustainable Earth Systems Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas. He holds the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Chair in Geophysics, established through the legacy of Cecil H. Green, a co-founder of Texas Instruments and UT Dallas.
- Education: B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Geophysics and Astronomy from the University of British Columbia; PhD in Geophysics from Stanford University.
Lumley specializes in seismic imaging and monitoring methods to study subsurface fluid flow and rock properties, with applications in natural resource exploration, earthquake analysis, and carbon dioxide sequestration. His work leverages high-performance computing for 3D imaging of the Earth’s subsurface, akin to medical ultrasound techniques.
He led two of the world’s largest carbon capture and storage projects in Australia, each exceeding $100 million, and has secured over $135 million in competitive research grants. His research bridges geophysics with biomedical science through the UT Dallas/UT Southwestern Green Centers.
- Scientific Honors: Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Chair in Geophysics.
Lumley’s career spans academia and industry, with prior roles as Chair of Geophysics and Director of the Center for Energy Geoscience at the University of Western Australia, and leadership of the UWA Reservoir Management research consortium.
