David Lowry is a Reader in Stable Isotopes and Greenhouse Gases at the Department of Earth Sciences, Royal Holloway, University of London since 2018. His research focuses on stable isotopes in greenhouse gases, past climate change, and mantle-derived mineralization. He leads the NERC-funded MOMENTUM project (2023–2026) and the DEFRA-funded Landfill Emissions 2 project (2024–2026). He supervises 12 PhD students and has an h-index of 45. Key areas include methane emissions quantification, isotopic tracers for environmental change, and mobile measurement technologies. Recent work includes satellite-derived methane validation and urban emissions tracking across eight countries.
Education and career milestones include establishing RHUL's atmospheric laboratory in 1994 and leading global collaborations on methane sources. He actively participates in UN CCAC projects and contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action.
Research outputs emphasize instrumentation innovation, such as laser spectroscopy for methane plume identification, and interdisciplinary approaches linking geochemistry to climate policy. Projects like isoMET (2022–2025) advance European emissions verification standards.
