Professor David Lowe is a Professor of Software Engineering in the School of Computer Science at The University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Engineering. He holds a B.E. (UTS, Hons, Medal) and a PhD (UTS), along with prestigious fellowships and memberships (PFHEA, SMACM, SMIEEE, MAAEE). His research focuses on remote laboratories, enhancing STEM education through shared experimental resources, and leveraging high-speed networks for flexible, 24/7 access to scientific equipment. He previously served as Associate Dean (Education) and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (2012–2019), and led the Centre for Real-Time Information Networks at UTS (2002–2008).
His research interests include distributed systems, web engineering, and educational technology, with over 200 publications and three textbooks. Key contributions include LabShare, a cross-institutional remote laboratory initiative, and advancements in remote lab architectures. He chairs Grok Academy and was CEO of LabShare Institute. Awards include the 2011 Engineers Australia Engineering Excellence Award finalist recognition and the 2002 McGraw-Hill New Engineering Educator Award.
Professor Lowe’s teaching includes courses on professionalism in computing and IT practice. He actively contributes to academic governance, editorial boards (e.g., ICST Transactions on Real-World Web), and conferences (e.g., REV2013 General Chair). Recent work explores professional competency development, AR integration in STEM education, and student engagement analytics.
