David Loewenstein is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English and the Humanities at Pennsylvania State University, serving as Assistant Director of Graduate Studies (Spring 2025). He specializes in early modern English literature and culture, with particular focus on Milton, book history, and the intersections of literature with politics and religion.

Research Interests: His work explores early modern literature through lenses of heresy, nationalism, tyranny, and classical influences. He emphasizes book history, Renaissance intellectual history, and the relationship between literature and historical events. Recent projects include studies on Milton’s political thought and Shakespearean religion.

His research has been supported by fellowships at the Folger Library, Newberry Library, and Churchill College, Cambridge.
