Dr. David Locky is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at MacEwan University since 2010. He holds a PhD (Environmental Biology & Ecology, University of Alberta, 2005), M.Sc. (Biology, University of Waterloo, 1999), BES (Geography, University of Waterloo, 1997), and a diploma in Fish and Wildlife Technology (Sir Sandford Fleming College, 1984). His research focuses on wetland ecology, plant diversity, and environmental policy, with current projects addressing microplastics in aquatic systems, fish dietary shifts in Lac La Biche, and Alberta wetland policy development. He is a Professional Wetland Scientist and Biologist, specializing in environmental impact assessments and wetland evaluations.
Dr. Locky teaches courses including Freshwater Ecology (Biol 310), Biological Statistics (Biol 337), and Principles of Ecology (Biol 208). He also advises senior student research projects and collaborates with the University of Alberta and Athabasca University as an Adjunct Professor, co-supervising graduate students and delivering guest lectures.
His expertise spans wetland classification, biogeochemistry, rare plant surveys, and anthropogenic impacts. Notable contributions include policy analyses on peatland conservation and studies on boreal forest harvesting effects. He has received multiple grants, including a Strategic Research Grant (2017–2019) and a Research Council Dissemination Fund award (2016).
