David Lerach is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado, part of the College of Natural and Health Sciences. He specializes in meteorology and teaches a wide range of courses including severe weather, numerical forecasting, and field-based storm chasing. His work integrates research, teaching, and public outreach in atmospheric sciences.
Dr. Lerach earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University and his B.S. in Meteorology from St. Cloud State University. After a visiting assistant professorship at The College at Brockport, he joined UNC in 2013, where he has developed hands-on, experiential curricula such as the storm-chasing field course (ESCI 491) and extreme mountain weather (MET 462).
His research lies in mesoscale meteorology, with a focus on numerical weather prediction and radar meteorology. He uses the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) and polarimetric radar hydrometeor identification to study aerosol-cloud interactions in tornadic storms and orographic snowfall events. His work aims to improve microphysical parameterizations in high-resolution models for better forecasting of convective systems and snowpack stability in complex terrain.
His recent publications span topics from dust impacts on supercells to virtual storm-chasing pedagogy. These works reflect a strong trend in both applied atmospheric modeling and innovative science education. His modeling studies often explore how environmental factors like aerosols and moisture influence storm dynamics, while his educational research promotes active learning in meteorology.
Dr. Lerach is actively involved in community and professional outreach. He is a member of the National Ski Patrol and teaches weather safety and avalanche-related meteorology to the public and U.S. Special Forces. He also leads student interactions with broadcast meteorologists at Denver7 News, enhancing communication skills. His work bridges academia, public safety, and education.
He is affiliated with several field campaigns and observational studies, including BAMEX and NAME, and utilizes tools such as airborne radar and high-resolution models. Though no formal grants or awards are listed, his sustained research and teaching efforts indicate strong program development. His leadership in field courses and community education reflects a commitment to practical, real-world applications of meteorology.
