David Lerach

David Lerach is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado, part of the College of Natural and Health Sciences. He specializes in meteorology and teaches a wide range of courses including severe weather, numerical forecasting, and field-based storm chasing. His work integrates research, teaching, and public outreach in atmospheric sciences.

Dr. Lerach earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University and his B.S. in Meteorology from St. Cloud State University. After a visiting assistant professorship at The College at Brockport, he joined UNC in 2013, where he has developed hands-on, experiential curricula such as the storm-chasing field course (ESCI 491) and extreme mountain weather (MET 462).

His research lies in mesoscale meteorology, with a focus on numerical weather prediction and radar meteorology. He uses the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) and polarimetric radar hydrometeor identification to study aerosol-cloud interactions in tornadic storms and orographic snowfall events.
