David L. Bradford is the Eugene D. O'Kelly II Senior Lecturer in Leadership, Emeritus at Stanford Graduate School of Business. He earned his PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan and has been at Stanford since 1969. His research focuses on leadership, interpersonal influence, and executive team performance, exploring how leaders can build strong teams that share management responsibilities.
Bradford's research interests center on developing leadership competencies and creating environments for effective interpersonal interaction. His work examines how authentic communication builds stronger work relationships and resolves interpersonal problems. He has developed training programs on leadership and team performance that have been implemented globally.
His publications consistently address power dynamics in organizational settings, particularly focusing on upward influence strategies and authentic leadership. The research demonstrates how constructive disagreements can enhance decision-making quality when properly managed within hierarchical structures.
Bradford has received the Exemplar of Excellence in Education award and Alumni Silver Apple for his teaching innovations. He created Stanford's seminal 'Interpersonal Dynamics' course (known as 'Touchy Feely') and leadership workshops for alumni. He consults for organizations including IBM, Cisco Systems, and Levi Strauss & Co., bridging academic research and executive practice.
