David Kress is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Maine since 2005. His work bridges creative writing and literary criticism, focusing on existential themes, narrative experimentation, and intersections between science and literature. He holds a PhD in Twentieth Century American Literature from Penn State University (2001), an MFA in Fiction Writing from Penn State (1995), an MA from the University of New Hampshire (1986), and a BA from the University of Connecticut (1980).
Research interests include the philosophy of 'nothingness,' anonymity in literature, and dark humor. Critical work examines the relationship between scientific discourse and literary expression.
Teaching responsibilities span creative writing workshops and courses on modern American literature, postmodern fiction, and the state of the novel in global contexts. He advises Stolen Island Review and The Maine Review, and chairs the Graduate Studies Committee and New Writing Series Steering Committee.
Outside academia, Kress is a musician, having collaborated with bands like Finland's From Some Flounder. His hobbies include sailing, barbecue, and restoring vintage cars like his 1962 Ford Falcon.
