David Kotz

David Kotz is the Provost of Dartmouth College and holds the Pat and John Rosenwald Professorship in Computer Science. He leads the Department of Computer Science and directs research initiatives such as the SPLICE project on smart home security and the CRAWDAD wireless data archive. His expertise spans security, IoT, and healthcare technologies.

Education: PhD in Computer Science from Duke University (1991), AB in Computer Science and Physics from Dartmouth College (1986). He also completed a Fulbright Fellowship at the Indian Institute of Science (2008–09) and served as a Visiting Professor at ETH Zürich (2019–20).

Research Interests: Kotz focuses on security and privacy in smart homes, pervasive computing, and wireless networks. His work addresses challenges like device authentication, data sharing policies, and secure IoT protocols. Recent projects include MOAT for smart home device detection and Amanuensis for blockchain-based health data systems.

Publications & Awards: Over 270 refereed papers, $89M in grants, and prestigious fellowships from AAAS, ACM, and IEEE. His work has been recognized with awards like the IMWUT Distinguished Paper Award (2021).

Advising & Grants: Merged over 100 research students/postdocs. Major grants include NIH-funded studies on opioid use disorder and NIST support for IoT security. His lab collaborates with institutions like ETH Zürich and the Dartmouth Institute for Security Technology Studies.

Labs & Teams: Leads the SPLICE lab and collaborates with the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health. His work integrates wearable tech (e.g., Amulet) with healthcare applications for stress detection and behavioral interventions.
