David Klamen is a Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University Northwest. His work explores themes of epistemology, perception, and memory through painting, combining figurative and abstract elements to question how we 'know' and perceive. He holds a BFA from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana (1983) and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1985).
Research interests include the intersection of art and philosophy, with a focus on meditative landscapes, meta-paintings, and installations like Life Trophies (2022) that layer visual fragments to evoke buried memories. His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo shows at Richard Gray Gallery since 1993 and collections at institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
Key exhibitions include Meta-paintings (multi-canvas installations reinterpreting art history), Compound Views (2005, exploring landscape perception), and Painting Paintings (2010, subverting art-historical canons). His ceramic sculptures Life Trophies (2022) reflect layered personal histories through chance-driven processes.
Publications include exhibition catalog essays (e.g., Compound Views, 2005) and critical features in ArtNews and the Huffington Post.
