David Joseph Madden is a Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University, serving as Chair of the Scientific Review Committee in the Center for Brain Imaging and Analysis. He holds affiliations with the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences and the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience. His research focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of aging, employing neuroimaging techniques like PET, fMRI, and DTI to study age-related changes in perception, attention, and memory. Key interests include functional connectivity, white matter integrity, and their links to cognitive performance.
Education:
- Ph.D., University of California, Davis (1977)
- M.A., University of Victoria, Canada (1974)
- B.A., University of California, Davis (1972)
Research Interests: His work explores how age-related changes in brain structure and function impact cognitive abilities. Current projects investigate resting-state connectivity, white matter pathways, and biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. Techniques include behavioral testing and advanced neuroimaging to map neural correlates of aging.
Grants & Collaborations:
- "High resolution diffusion imaging of brain connectivity in healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease" (NIH, 2024–2027)
- "Neuroimaging of Visual Attention in Aging" (NIH, 2011–2025)
- Over 35 grants funded by NIH and other institutions.
Labs & Teams: He leads the Madden Lab within the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center (BIAC), focusing on translational research to improve diagnosis and rehabilitation strategies for age-related cognitive decline.
