David James Heslop

Associate Professor David James Heslop is affiliated with UNSW Sydney, specifically the School of Population Health. He is a dual-qualified General Practitioner (FRACGP) and Occupational & Environmental Physician (FAFOEM), with over 15 years of military service as Senior Medical Adviser for CBRNE to the Australian Army and ADF leadership.

His research focuses on health systems innovation using computational modeling and simulation to address complex challenges in epidemic response, disaster preparedness, CBRNE medicine, and organizational resilience. He employs hybrid modeling (agent-based, discrete event, system dynamics), artificial intelligence, and epidemiological methods to investigate public health interventions and socio-technical systems.

Recent publications highlight his expertise in infectious disease modeling, CBRNE risk management, and AI applications in public health, with work spanning epidemic simulations, toxin exposure analysis, and emergency response frameworks. Grants include MRFF Frontiers Grant for EPIWATCH and NHMRC CRE funding for BREATHE and ISER projects.

He supervises PhD candidates in public health, bioterrorism, and emergency medicine, while teaching PHCM9662 Health Aspects of Crises and PHCM9789 Bioterrorism and Health Intelligence at UNSW. His work intersects defence policy, climate-driven CBRNE proliferation, and urban emergency response systems.
