David J. Thomas is the W.D. Bryan Professor of Biology at Lyon College since 1999, teaching courses like Principles of Biology, Speleology, and Microbiology. His research focuses on extremophiles in caves and astrobiology, particularly microbial survival in extreme environments and ecopoesis experiments for Mars colonization. He has conducted fieldwork in Ozark caves and developed rocket-based atmospheric sampling systems (LADCAP). His education includes a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Idaho and an M.S. in Biology from Central Washington University.
- Education: Ph.D. Botany (University of Idaho, 1998), M.S. Biology (Central Washington University, 1993)
- Labs/Teams: Ozark Underground Laboratory, Ozark Cave Research Group
Research interests include astrobiology, extremophiles, and primordial evolution. He has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and edited conference proceedings. His work frequently explores microbial adaptations to low-oxygen, high-CO₂, and low-pressure environments.
