David J. Sanchez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Western University of Health Sciences' College of Pharmacy. He joined the university in 2011 and also serves as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. His research focuses on viral manipulation of immune responses, particularly how HIV, KSHV, and SARS-CoV-2 hijack host immune signaling pathways to enhance replication and persistence. Key projects include HIV cytokine interference, KSHV modulation of innate immunity, and SARS-CoV-2 immune protein dynamics.
Education includes a PhD in Biomedical Science from UCSF (2004), a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Texas (1999), and a postdoctoral fellowship in Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics at UCLA (2004–2009). Recent grants include NIH funding for studies on HIV's Vpu-mediated JAK1 targeting (2023–2025) and KSHV's role in AIDS-defining cancers (2021–2024).
Publications highlight his work on viral immune evasion, vaccine development, and antiviral therapies. Notable contributions include editorial insights on measles eradication challenges and monkeypox's implications for global herd immunity.
