David J. Popalisky is an Associate Professor at the Department of Theatre and Dance, College of Arts and Sciences, Santa Clara University. He teaches courses in Modern Contemporary Dance, Choreography, Dance History, and the interdisciplinary Physics of Dance class. His work bridges performance, education, and social commentary through multimedia dance productions.
- Education: MA in Theatre Arts/Dance Emphasis (San Jose State University), MFA in Choreography (Mills College)
Popalisky’s research focuses on contemporary choreography, historical dance analysis, and the integration of dance with critical social themes like water conservation (The Water Project, 2021) and wrongful convictions (Barred from Life, 2004). His publications in Theatre Topics and Times of Change explore transnational dance movements and Futurist artistic principles.
- Scientific Awards: 2023 Artist Laureate, 2013 Bernard J. Hubbard Collaboration Award, 2005 CLEA Creativity Award
He collaborates with SCU’s Center for Arts and Humanities and has presented at international conferences in Austria and Salzburg. His Walk Across CA course (2012, 2014, 2016, 2024) combines dance with environmental and cultural exploration.
