David J. Mooney is the Robert P. Pinkas Family Professor of Bioengineering at Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Founding Core Faculty & Lead of the Immuno-Materials group at the Wyss Institute. He specializes in biomaterials and cell signaling, focusing on therapeutic angiogenesis, cancer immunotherapy, and tissue regeneration. His 2009 breakthrough melanoma vaccine demonstrated tumor elimination in mice using bioengineered discs activating the immune system.
Education: BS, Chemical Engineering (University of Wisconsin-Madison); PhD, Chemical Engineering (MIT); Postdoctoral Studies (Harvard Medical School).
Research: Designs biomaterials to modulate cellular behavior, with projects on CAR-T cell activation via scaffolds, mechanoimmunology, and lymph node microenvironment studies. Recent work includes injectable hydrogel adhesives for muscle regeneration and immune-modulating technologies licensed by Attivare.
Awards: Includes milestones like the 2009 melanoma vaccine achievement and 2024 advancements in CAR-T therapies. Active in professional societies, editorial roles, and industry advisory boards.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Mooney Lab for Cell and Tissue Engineering, mentoring over 20 graduate/postdoctoral researchers. Notable advisees include PhD candidates Joshua Price (T-cell development) and Kyle Ruark (qualifying exams passed 2024).
