Dr David J. McGarvey is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in the Lennard-Jones School of Chemical and Physical Sciences at Keele University, serving as Examinations Officer for Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry. With over 30 years of academic experience since his appointment as Lecturer in 1993, he has established himself as a prominent researcher in photochemistry and an innovator in chemistry education.
McGarvey earned his GRSC from Paisley College of Technology (now University of the West of Scotland) in 1985 followed by a PhD in 1988 under Professor T. George Truscott. His postdoctoral work included research at the University of Oxford (1988-1990) with Professors Mike Pilling and Gus Hancock, and at Loughborough University (1990-1993) with Professor Frank Wilkinson.
His research program focuses on applying time-resolved spectroscopic methods to study photochemical and free radical processes with biological relevance. Current projects investigate carotenoid free radical chemistry in relation to antioxidant properties and the photophysics of fullerene derivatives for potential medical applications. His work has attracted significant funding including £100K from the EC and £100K from the Leverhulme Trust.
McGarvey's educational scholarship has centered on innovative laboratory practical design, context-based learning, and technology-enhanced feedback methods including digital audio and screencasting. His publications and presentations on chemistry education have influenced teaching practices across multiple institutions in the UK and Ireland.

McGarvey has secured multiple teaching innovation grants including a 2011 HEA Physical Science Development Project (£4,735), a 2007 Keele Teaching Innovation Award (£1,260), and several LTSN/HEA grants totaling over £8,000. His collaborative research involves partnerships with Professor Andy Young at Liverpool John Moores University and multiple European institutions.
As an educator, he serves as Module Leader for several undergraduate chemistry courses and has developed numerous innovative practical exercises that integrate real-world contexts with employability skills development. His laboratory teaching approach emphasizes student-centered learning and assessment innovation.
