Dr David J. Johnston is an Honorary Lecturer in the School of Divinity at the University of St Andrews. He holds a PhD in New Testament and specializes in the book of Romans, Pauline theology, and Koine Greek language. His research focuses on the historical and theological context of Paul's letters, particularly addressing controversies in Rom 7, where he proposes a novel interpretation of Paul's engagement with opponents' Law. Johnston has published book reviews in peer-reviewed journals and is actively revising his doctoral thesis for publication while working on a second monograph.
His research interests include discourse analysis, the historical occasion of Paul’s letters, and the intersection of Pauline theology with Second Temple Judaism. He has presented his work at international conferences and contributes to scholarly debates through critical engagement with contemporary Pauline studies. Johnston also holds a fellowship with The Higher Education Academy, reflecting his commitment to pedagogical excellence.
