David Holdsworth is Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford, a BHF Senior Fellow, and Consultant Cardiologist. He serves as a senior lecturer in the Academic Department of Military Medicine and holds a military consultant cardiologist position. His primary academic affiliation is with the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG) within the Medical Sciences Division, and he is a fellow of St Hugh's College.
His educational background includes MStJ, MA, DPhil in Exercise Metabolism (completed in the Clarke Group at DPAG), DAvMed (Diploma in Aviation Medicine), and FRCP (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians).
Holdsworth's research focuses on human performance under environmental extremes including altitude, hypoxia, and acceleration forces, with specialization in cardiopulmonary exercise testing, aviation cardiology, and cardiac imaging. He pioneers exertional cardiopulmonary assessment to diagnose functional limitations in breathless patients and leads Long COVID research through the Defence COVID recovery service (DCRS) and Military COVID (MCOVID) study.

Holdsworth serves as clinical lead for diagnostic exercise testing at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and spearheads military Long COVID response initiatives. He actively collaborates with researchers including Neil Herring and Nick Talbot through the Robbins Group in DPAG.
