Dr. David Hoganson is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and serves as an Assistant in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Boston Children's Hospital. He directs the Computational 3D Visualization Program and maintains clinical focus on neonates and children with congenital heart disease. Dr. Hoganson partners with Dr. Fynn-Thompson in cardiac assist device and heart/lung transplant programs, and works as an intensivist in the cardiac intensive care unit.
Dr. Hoganson received his undergraduate education at Grove City College (1998), medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine (2004), completed residency at Washington University in St. Louis (2012), followed by fellowships at the same institution (2014) and Boston Children's Hospital (2016). He is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in both Congenital Heart Surgery and General Thoracic Surgery.
As a child born with complex congenital heart disease requiring two surgeries, Dr. Hoganson brings unique personal insight to his clinical practice. His research laboratory focuses on utilizing autologous umbilical veins as shunt or patch material for neonates with complex congenital heart disease. With his engineering background, he innovates in 3D modeling for surgical planning, medical device development, transplant therapies, and lung tissue engineering to improve ECMO technologies. His work bridges clinical practice with engineering solutions to enhance surgical outcomes.
Analysis of Dr. Hoganson's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on computational approaches to congenital heart surgery. His work emphasizes Fontan circulation hemodynamics, statistical shape modeling, and intraoperative conduction mapping to prevent complications. A clear pattern emerges of using computational fluid dynamics and 3D visualization to optimize surgical planning, particularly for complex congenital defects like hypoplastic left heart syndrome and interrupted inferior vena cava. His research demonstrates how engineering principles can be applied to improve surgical outcomes in pediatric cardiac patients.
Dr. Hoganson leads the Computational 3D Visualization Program, which creates patient-specific surgical models to enhance preoperative planning. His team collaborates across disciplines, bringing together surgeons, engineers, and researchers to develop innovative solutions for challenging congenital heart conditions. His unique perspective as both a patient and clinician drives his commitment to developing less invasive, more effective treatments for children with congenital heart disease.
