Dr. David Hilmey serves as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at St. Bonaventure University, where he has been a faculty member since 2008. He previously held roles as Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences (2016–present), Chair of the Department of Chemistry, and Director of the Honors Program (2013–2016). His research focuses on organic and biochemistry, particularly enzyme catalysis, vitamin synthesis mechanisms, and drug design. He has secured over a dozen grants and contributed to strategic planning committees, including the University Planning Commission and the Presidential Commission on Mission.
Education: He earned a B.S. from the University at Buffalo (2001), a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Ohio State University (2006), and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University (2008).
Research interests emphasize catalytic pathways in biomolecules, photodynamic therapy applications via core-modified porphyrins, and mechanistic studies of coenzyme biosynthesis. His recent work includes enzymatic mechanisms of ribose insertion and vitamin B6 chemistry.
Leadership contributions include co-chairing the Student Success and Retention Committee and serving on Middle States accreditation committees. His academic leadership spans faculty advocacy, strategic planning, and institutional mission alignment.
