He directs the Archaeological Mapping Lab, focusing on digital cartography, GIS, remote sensing, and spatial analysis. His research interests include ancient Greek and Roman cities, sanctuaries, architecture, and athletics, with a particular emphasis on the integration of technology in archaeological studies.
Key projects include the Mt. Lykaion Excavation and Survey Project, exploring the Sanctuary of Zeus, and the Corinth Computer Project, reconstructing Roman Corinth's urban landscape. He has also contributed to studies of athletic facilities, such as stadia and hippodromes, and the application of mathematical principles in ancient urban planning.
Romano teaches courses like Mapping Ancient Cities, bridging archaeology with digital tools. His work highlights interdisciplinary approaches, combining field excavation, scientific analysis (e.g., radiocarbon dating), and computational methods to understand ancient societies. Ongoing research focuses on the cultural and spatial dynamics of ritual sites, Roman colonization in the Corinthia, and the legacy of athletic festivals in the Peloponnese.
His lab’s initiatives include the Digital Augustan Rome project, advancing 3D reconstructions of imperial urbanism. Romano’s contributions also extend to public outreach through curated museum collections and educational resources, making archaeological knowledge accessible to broader audiences.
