David Giffels is a Professor of English and NEOMFA Campus Coordinator at the University of Akron, where he teaches creative nonfiction and literature. He holds an M.A. from the University of Akron. His research focuses on Ohio’s cultural identity, the Rust Belt experience, and creative nonfiction writing. Notable works include Barnstorming Ohio (2020), analyzing Ohio’s electoral and social significance, and Furnishing Eternity (2018), a memoir awarded the Ohioana Book Award. His writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Atlantic, and Wall Street Journal.
His publications blend journalism, memoir, and regional analysis, addressing themes like industrial decline, electoral politics, and family life. Awards include multiple New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choices and a PEN Award nomination. He co-authored works on Devo and Akron’s rubber industry, reflecting his deep engagement with Ohio’s cultural and economic history.
Giffels advises the NEOMFA program, fostering creative writing talent in Northeast Ohio. His career spans academia, journalism, and TV writing (e.g., MTV’s Beavis and Butt-Head), blending scholarly rigor with popular storytelling.
