David Garner is a full professor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM), where he has taught composition, chamber music, music literature, and music theory since 1979. He co-founded the award-winning Ensemble for These Times in 2007, known for innovative programming and recordings. His music blends classical, neoclassical, jazz, rock, blues, and non-Western traditions, reflecting a cross-genre approach.

Garner's research and creative work focuses on composition, chamber music, and music theory, with interests spanning jazz, rock, blues, and non-Western music traditions. His compositions are featured in recordings on labels such as Pentatone and Centaur Records, and his works are available online at 3232 Music and YouTube.
His accolades include the American Prize in Composition (Chamber Music) (2015) and the Sarlo Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching (1997). He has also received multiple Global Music Awards (2018, 2021). His collaborations with librettist Mark Hernandez, soprano Lisa Delan, and Raeeka Shehabi-Yaghmai, as well as commissions from Pianist Dale Tsang, organist Joby Bell, and the Del Sol String Quartet, highlight his impact on contemporary music.
