David Gardiner is an Associate Professor and Chair in Asian Studies, Religion, and Culture at Colorado College. His academic focus lies in the early history of Japanese Buddhism, particularly the 9th-century founder Kūkai of the Shingon school. He teaches courses on Buddhist philosophy, East Asian religions, and religious poetry. Gardiner holds a B.A. from Amherst College, an M.A. from the University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. from Stanford University.
His research explores Kūkai's thought, interreligious dialogue, and Tantric Buddhist practices. Notable works include Kūkai: Japan’s First Vajrayāna Visionary (2024) and contributions to the Oxford Handbook of Tantric Studies. He has been honored with the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies’ Frederick J. Streng Book Award (2013).
Gardiner’s academic roles include advising students in Buddhist studies and leading field studies. His work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary religious discourse, emphasizing the intersection of East Asian traditions and global comparative frameworks.
